Speaking of moving: previously I was based in Central Pennsylvania, specifically the area around Penn State university which is in itself a beacon for the area culinarily, culturally and academically. The rural areas around it was what I was primarily concerned with documenting.
CULTURE SHOCK AND BEEF STOCK
Now I am based out of Philadelphia and have recently celebrated a year in the area, with somewhat gainful employment and a cavalcade of triumphs, failures, learning experiences and a series of tasteful and distasteful events. The food here is decidedly NOT forgotten, as Philly, being the sixth largest city in the country, has one of the largest and most diverse restaurant scenes in the country. I'm based in South Philadelphia and boy howdy let me tell ya there's no shortage of things I've never tasted before surrounding me at every step. For instance, I didn't realize there were such things as wonderful as Vietnamese strip malls abounding places like Washington Avenue and I sure as shit never thought I'd live around the corner from a James Beard nominated Indonesian restaurant that serves most of their food from a steam table and I've never spent more than $15 at.
So now I'm interested in documenting my culinary experiences in this city. I am not sure if I'll maintain this blog or start another one.
BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY BIG BOWLS OF PHO
Even though I work in restaurants, I'm going to probably focus on holes in the walls, classic spots, and stuff not everyone's quite so familiar with. Food perhaps less forgotten and more food I haven't discovered yet; or just places that do things really frickin' well.
Welcome back if you read in the first place, all five of you. And hopefully welcome to some new eyes.
